My recent visit to 821 Sixth Avenue NYC
I had the occasion recently to visit New York City for several days. I saw a lot of terrific art, including the Cindy Sherman show at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Biennial, and the Francesca Woodman exhibition at the Guggenheim.

Celebrate San Diego’s local jazz musicians and take in the “Sounds of Jazz Loft”
MOPA’s newest exhibition, The Jazz Loft Project: W. Eugene Smith in NYC, 1957-1965, displays Smith’s obsessive documentation of a dilapidated, five-story loft at 821 Sixth Avenue in New York City’s flower district. Capturing the nocturnal jazz scene inside the loft and the street life below, W. Eugene Smith made approximately 40,000 exposures and recorded 4,000 hours of audiotape.

CARE Video Projects
The CARE program is fortunate to be able to carry on a number of extra activities this year, thanks to a special grant award from the National Endowment for the Arts. One of our favorite projects as part of this grant is to produce four videos about the collections of the CARE arts partners. The purpose of the videos, which feature two students as the hosts, is to be a teaching tool in the classroom for introducing many more students and teachers to the artwork and objects we use on a regular basis through our exhibitions, performances, and other educational programs.
MOPA Store Now Carrying Sam Stephenson’s publication on The Jazz Loft Project

May 19th marks the beginning of the much anticipated exhibition, The Jazz Loft Project: W. Eugene Smith in NYC, 1957-1965. This exhibit consists of 163 photographs by W. Eugene Smith, a celebrated former Life magazine photographer who, in 1957, left the home of his family to move into the infamous five-story loft building in New York City that unknowingly became the centerpiece of what is thought to be his greatest body of work.
I AM NOT A HIPSTER
The buzz this week is the upcoming official local premier of “I Am Not A Hipster,” screening this Friday at MOPA in partnership with San Diego Film Festival and Sezio. I Am Not A Hipster has deep roots in San Diego and was an official selection in the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.
"I Am Not A Hipster" was shot in San Diego by SDSU grads and focuses on the San Diego indie music scene. Writer/Director Dustin Destin Cretton short film Short Term 12 won the Jury Prize at Sundance in 2009.

I’ve helped coordinate MOPA’s Annual Youth Exhibition for the past few years, but I also teach photography to some of the students who submit. I usually work with fourth graders (for you non-parents and non-teachers that equals 9 or 10 years old).
