FotoFest 2012 International Bienniel
Last month, I attended the third week of the FotoFest 2012 International Bienniel, now in its fourteenth year, in Houston. This has become the largest international portfolio review event in the nation. It was an honor to participate as a reviewer representing MOPA and a pretty incredible experience overall. It’s a way to see work from photographers who are creating now and to be united with colleagues, some of whom I’d met before and some I was meeting for the first time. Not a bad gig.

Preservation Week
In 2010, a number of organizations supporting libraries and archives sponsored the first Preservation Week; a week-long effort to bring attention to the many millions of cultural artifacts held in museums across the US that are in need of preservation or conservation care. This year, Preservation Week is being held April 22-28, and institutions throughout the country are highlighting their many efforts to take good care of their collections.

Second in the Snapshots series presented by the Dubois Library is Souvenirs Entomolgiques, by J. H. Fabre. Known as the “father of entomology,” Fabre’s books make insects look beautiful (well, almost). Enjoy!

Dubois Library Snapshots: The Disciples, by James Mollison
"Snapshots" is a series of booktrailers that showcase some of the wonderful photography books housed in the Dubois Library. Here's a link to the first in the series, highlighting "The Disciples" by James Mollison. Enjoy!

Announcing the winners of MOPA's Cut + Paste Photo Collage Contest

The top three collage artists will receive gift packages that include MOPA gifts, photography books, and tickets to TOTEM by Cirque du Soleil.

Instant Adventure
Next month I will be traveling to Europe for the first time in ten years. While I frantically plan what I should wear for two weeks in Paris, I cannot let myself forget two vital items: a travel journal and a camera. For many years and for many countries I have always brought a small journal with me to records details of each day. I usually end up stuffing receipts of delicious meals, business cards and sometimes a pressed flower in the pages. Reading those journals can immediately transport me to a beach, and I suddenly feel as calm as I did when I was lying in the sand.
