Sounds of Jazz Loft Spotlight on Vocalist and Guitarist Steph Johnson

Join us for the first Thursday in June, July, and August for an evening solo jazz session in MOPA’s galleries, featuring celebrated local musicians selected by Jazz 88.3. Experience the current exhibition, The Jazz Loft Project: W. Eugene Smith in NYC, 1957-1965, while the music of the time is performed live! 

FEATURED JAZZ SOLOIST: Vocalist and guitarist Steph Johnson is that rare panoramic talent that captures your attention from the first note. Her blend of Soul, Jazz, Funk, and Blues has been featured on KPRI FM and KSDS Jazz 88, with numerous television appearances on KUSI, FOX 5 and San Diego 6’s “San Diego Living”. She has opened shows for music legends like Stanley Clarke, Poncho Sanchez and Maceo Parker, backed up Cuba Gooding Sr., and worked with a number of Grammy Award- winning artists and performers. The Things They Carried

Presented by the National Endowment for the Arts & Arts Midwest --Big Read, this event shares stories about the hearts and minds of soldiers who return home from war.

View photos taken by George G. Clark III: Under the Radar: The Day Before I Left Vietnam.

12:00 PM: Enjoy an encore screening of “Burned” (21 minutes) introduced by BET’s award winning filmmaker, Phyllis Toben Bancroft, a film about a female Air Force Veteran who returns home from Iraq and faces issues dealing with PTSD.

Interlude: Musical by award-winning guitarist, Lisa Sanders and readings from The Things They Carried.

1:00 PM: See a Staged Reading of “Medal of Honor Rag” by Tom Cole. This award-winning one-act play is based on the true life of Dale “D.J.” Jackson, a Vietnam Vet from Detroit, who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic efforts in Vietnam, yet he suffered with “traumatic grief.” Directed by Antonio “T.J.” Johnson with Joe Powers, Abner Genece, and Joshua Jones

In collaboration with Black Storytellers of San Diego, Inc., Valencia Park/Malcolm X Library, and Vagabond Theatre Project.

Coming of Age Film Festival: Triplets of Belleville (2003)

World Refugee Day

The Museum of Photographic Arts is proud to host the second annual World Refugee Day on June 16, in collaboration with the San Diego Refugee Forum and USA for United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). The event will turn a spotlight on the plight of refugees, while celebrating the culture and diversity of San Diego’s vibrant refugee community through conversation, food, music and film. 

 

Schedule of Events:

·       3:00 – 6:00 pm: Conversations with artists: El Cajon-based rapper Timz, filmmaker Cy Kuckenbacher and photographer Joshua Seale, followed by a panel discussion

·       6:00 – 7:00 pm: Reception featuring music and food from refugee-owned local businesses and performances

·       7:00 pm: Screening of the 2007 film, The Kite Runner. Please reserve a seat for the screening at http://www.mopa.org/event/2012-06-16/world-refugee-day.

Sierra Club Summer Workshop and Lecture Series

MOPA's annual summer workshop and lecture series is back for the second time with through stimulating lectures and workshops lead by some of San Diego’s most experienced and celebrated photographers. The series is produced in conjunction with the Sierra Club Photo Section and will launch with an opening event and lecture at the Museum on Thursday, June 21.

This year’s lineup includes nationally renowned photographers Don Bartletti, Michael Spengler and Donna Cosentino, as well as San Diego Union-Tribune photojournalists K. C. Alfred, Nelvin Cepeda and Howard Lipin. Participants will also have the opportunity to view MOPA’s summer exhibition The Jazz Loft Project: Photographs and Tapes of W. Eugene Smith.
