Join us for the first Thursday in June, July, and August for an evening solo jazz session in MOPA’s galleries, featuring celebrated local musicians selected by Jazz 88.3. Experience the current exhibition, The Jazz Loft Project: W. Eugene Smith in NYC, 1957-1965, while the music of the time is performed live! FEATURED JAZZ SOLOIST: Jazz Bassist Rob Thorsen has established himself as one of southern California’s most in-demand and creative bassists. Rob Leads his own jazz quartet and can also be heard playing with the Mike Wofford/ Holly Hofmann quartet, the Steph Johnson Trio, the Gilbert Castellanos Quintet, saxophonist Charles McPherson, guitarist Mundell Lowe and others. Workshop with Michael Spengler: Natural Light Portraiture 07.15.2012 10:00 am Michael Spengler joins us for a second year to teach the best practices, helpful tips and eye-opening insights for producing the best in natural light portraiture using little equipment. Spengler’s workshop will focus on the difference between an ordinary image and a truly striking portrait through the play of available angles, light and shadow, soft shapes and hard lines. Using his own work as reference, Michael will demonstrate his techniques and how he constructs stylistic and dramatic images. During the last two hours, Spengler will explain lighting and posing during a live action demo in and around Balboa Park and work with participants to put his techniques to work with real models. Lunch is provided. Participants will need to bring a DSLR camera, additional lenses you already have and the camera manual if available. Days of Wonder: Machu Picchu plus Great Wall; A Lecture with Mike Torrey 07.19.2012 7:00 pm Mike Torrey will present work from his award winning photography book on Peru’s Machu Picchu, Stone Offerings, Machu Picchu’s Terraces of Enlightenment, plus new images from his recent trip to the Great Wall in China. You will see these two immensely popular “Wonders of the World” with hardly any visitors evident and discover their power to inspire hundreds of years after they were built. Mike Torrey is a San Diego based architectural photographer and his book, Stone Offerings, won the 2010 Benjamin Franklin Award for Best Arts book by the Independent Book Publishers Association. His presentation last summer at MOPA, “Machu Picchu: A Centennial Celebration,” was completely sold out.
