Workshop with Don Bartletti: Documentary Photography

For the past 29 years Don Bartletti has traveled the world on assignment for the Los Angeles Times. In 2003, his passion for local and international photojournalism earned him the Pulitzer Prize. Bartletti’s workshop will provide insight into how he creates personal pictures that tell a story, revealing the difference between a picture and a photograph. Following the discussion, Bartletti will lead participants through a series of tricks and techniques designed to outsmart the automatic camera functions and further develop participant’s understanding of light and space. This workshop requires a camera with manual adjustments for aperture and shutter speed. A strobe light is also helpful, but not required, for this workshop.

Lunch is provided. Participants will need to bring a DSLR camera, additional lenses you already have and the camera manual if available. Before the workshop, it is recommended that you become familiar with changing the settings on your camera while in manual mode (changing the f-stop, shutter speed, iso, exposure compensation, white balance).

Mark Edward Harris Lecture: The Way of the Japanese Bath

Please join us for a lecture with photographer Mark Edward Harris as he discusses the unique and tempestuous relationship inhabitants of island-nations have with water.  He will present work from his hot spring series and publication, The Way of the Japanese Bath, and more recent photographs of his first hand experience with the aftermath of the 2011 Japan tsunami.

Mark Edward Harris (www.markedwardharris.com) has traveled and photographed in more than 80 countries. His editorial work has appeared in publications including Life, GEO, Conde Nast Traveler, Forbes Life, Islands, Afar, Vogue, Wallpaper, Harpers Bazaar, Playboy and the Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine. His commercial clients range from The Gap to Coca-Cola to Mexicana Airlines. His books include Faces of the Twentieth Century: Master Photographers and Their Work, The Way of the Japanese Bath, Wanderlust, Inside North Korea, and Inside Iran. He is the recipient of numerous awards including a CLIO, ACE, Aurora Gold, IPA and Photographer of the Year at the Black & White Spider Awards. For the past year he has focused his efforts on documenting Japan’s tsunami recovery efforts and North Korea under its new leadership.
