Chris McCaw: Sunburn

05.03.2013 7:00 pm

Join us on the evening of May 3rd for a special lecture by San Francisco based photographer Chris McCaw, who will be speaking about his innovative Sunburn project. In this body of work, begun in 2003, McCaw creates images by allowing the sun to burn its path onto a paper negative during a long exposure, using the camera as a tool for both creation and destruction. The lecture will be followed by a signing of McCaw's most recent book, Sunburn.

About the Photographer
Chris McCaw was featured in MOPA's 2010 exhibition, State of Mind: California Invitiation. An irreverent, uplifting comedy about friendship, trust and human possibility, The Intouchables has broken box office records in its native France and across Europe. Based on a true story of friendship between a handicap millionaire (Francois Cluzet) and his street smart ex-con caretaker (Omar Sy), The Intouchables depicts an unlikely camaraderie rooted in honesty and humor between two individuals who, on the surface, would seem to have nothing in common. -- © Weinstein

Jessica Lange: unseen

Jessica Lange has maintained a career as a fine art photographer for nearly two decades, alongside her work as an acclaimed actress. As a photographer, Lange documents diverse cultures from regional and international travels. Alternately comforting and disquieting, the artist’s striking and unexpected photographs possess a kind of moody mystery that is appropriately cinematic. MOPA is pleased to present the first United States exhibition of Jessica Lange’s mid-career retrospective unseen. The exhibition gathers work from Mexico, Ethiopia, Romania, Russia, Finland, Italy, France and the United States.

30x: three decades

In 2013, MOPA celebrates 30 years as a museum in Balboa Park dedicated to exhibiting photography, film, and video. Prior to MOPA’s founding in 1983, it existed as the “Center for Photographic Arts,” a nonprofit organization created in the early 1970s which exhibited and promoted photography as an art form. Since its founding, MOPA has presented dynamic world-class photography exhibitions in San Diego and built a world class photography collection. 30x: Three Decades highlights one acquisition from each of MOPA’s 30 years, showcasing a selection of influential figures in the history of photography, including works by Alexander Rodchenko, Loretta Lux, Thomas Struth, Lee Friedlander, Robert Adams, Marian Drew and other influential artists.

Cinema Select
You decide what movie from 1983 you want to see?  Valley Girl?  The Outsiders?  Risky Business?

Voting has ended and the winner is... The Outsiders. So that is what we will be showing at this POP Thursdays event.  Thanks to everyone who voted.

Push Pin Party
In conjunction with the POP Thursdays event will also be a "Push Pin Party." Just like when we opened in 1983, we invite you to put your pictures up on the walls of the museum.  This is a rare opportunity for the aspiring photographer to have an image hanging in a world-class photography museum.

Mobile Photography Challenge
Since everyone has a camera on their phones these days, we are adding a Mobile Photo Challenge to the Push Pin Party.  Use #MOPA30 to submit an image that may be selected to hang on our walls at this POP event.  Check out the Mobile Photo Challenge page for more details.
