Pulitzer Prize winner and former POYi winner Brian Smith shares insights from his last 30 years in editorial photography as he moved from Pulitzer Prize-winning sports photographer to celebrity portrait photographer for Hollywood's A-List. Smith will speak about both the art and commerce of editorial photography and what every artist needs to know about the business of photography to remain in business. In this presentation, Smith will share ways to grab and keep the attention of photo editors and art directors, how shooting personal projects can promote your vision and land the jobs you'll love to shoot, and ways to keep your portfolio and vision fresher than next year's winner of The X Factor.

Brian Smith is a Sony Artisan of Imagery and a former winner of Pictures of the Year International, the oldest and most prestigious photojournalism program in the world (on view now at MOPA).

08.08.2013 6:00 pm

THE SOURCE FAMILY (2013)
Thursday, August 8
Outdoor Pre-Party: 6 PM

Film Screening: 8 PM

Change to pre-party: All ticket holders are invited to the pre-party on the lawns of the Botanical Building from 6-8 p.m. for complimentary cocktails, live music, and picnic-style lounging.

Take a Strange and Beautiful Trip Inside a '70s Love Cult

The Source Family was a radical experiment in '70s utopian living. Their iconic style, health food restaurant, rock band, and beautiful women made them the darlings of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip—but their unconventional behavior ultimately led to their dramatic demise. THE SOURCE FAMILY (2013, 98 minutes) provides an intimate view of the ultimate California commune through their own archival photos, home movies, and contemporary interviews.

Before the film, join your Aquarian tribe on the lawns of the San Diego Botanical Building for a mind-blowing outdoor pre-party, with libations from Alchemy and live music.

After the screening, stay for a Q & A with director Jodi Wille and Alicia Previn, an original member of the Source Family.

TICKETS:

General Admission: $10 Non-Member / $8 MOPA Member

Includes access to outdoor pre-party, 2 complimentary drinks, film screening and Q&A.

NOTE: There is no dinner package option anymore.

*Suggested attire: 70’s chic/bohemian/white

**Check in will take place on the lawns of the Botanical Building (next to Lily Pond)

Saturday, August 17th, 2pm-6pm at MOPA
$50 Members, Students, Seniors / $60 General

*Enrollment limited to 15 participants. Please bring with you a digital camera and USB Flash drive.

Workshop Description

No matter the media, powerful photographs have roots in the "feature hunt". "Feature" photographs, though difficult to pin down in words, have been described as "the capture of an exceptional moment within a common, everyday occurrence.” In this exclusive, hands-on workshop led by award-winning Union-Tribute photojournalist James Gregg, participants will explore, study and practice what makes a successful feature photograph. Following instruction in MOPA's galleries and classrooms, participants will embark on their own feature hunt within a 3 mile radius of Balboa Park (transportation of your choice - on foot, by bike, etc). Finally, the group will reconvene for a critique of the captured images.

About the Instructor

James Gregg is a staff photographer at the San Diego Union-Tribune with nearly a decade of experience working in newspapers. In 2009 he was named NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism Photographer of the Year for smaller markets while at the Arizona Daily Star, and was Arizona Photographer of the Year in 2008 and 2009. In 2012 James received two awards for multimedia from Pictures of the Year International and one for NPPA's Best of Photojournalism. In 2013 his electronic book project “Health Care 911” won the prize for Best Ebook in Pictures of the Year international, along with a third place win in Multimedia Portfolio of the Year
