Taiwan Cinema: Dragon Inn

06.05.2014 7:00 pm

Dragon Inn

Dir. King Hu I 1967 I 111 min.

The box office sensation that made King Hu's reputation as a stylist, storyteller, and innovator, Dragon Inn is Hu at his cinematic nimblest. Wandering heroes, imperial guards, and escaped siblings converge at Dragon Inn, the wilderness pit stop that would go on to become one of the most storied settings of the wuxia genre. Within this and other confined spaces, Hu would deploy an arsenal of tightly choreographed trickery that would go on to become his signature.

Taiwan Cinema: A Touch of Zen

06.06.2014 7:00 pm

A Touch of Zen

Dir. King Hu I 1971 I 200 min.

While Hu had already been credited for bringing the woman warrior to the forefront of swordplay film, A Touch of Zen is the apotheosis of his efforts. This is King Hu's magnum opus, at once a sprawling epic drama of religious proportions and an anthology of brilliant action set pieces, including one that famously inspired the bamboo forest scene in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Just as iconic is star Hsu Feng -- hair tied up, sword in hand, eyes ready for the kill. A Touch of Zen won a technical award at Cannes in 1975, the first prize ever won by a Chinese-language film in one of the world's top festivals.

Taiwan Cinema: The Valiant Ones

06.07.2014 7:00 pm

The Valiant Ones

Dir. King Hu I 1975 I 102 min.

This is King Hu at his most boundless and his artistic vision at its most rambunctious and even abstract, culminating in one of the most show-stopping film finales ever. The lashings are maximized, the choreography whirs with an excess of flair and invention, and the villains -- in this case a gang of Japanese pirates, including one played by a young Sammo Hung -- are as uncompromising as the Ming Dynasty heroes are fearless.

Art Lab: Cy Kuckenbaker #3

06.21.2014 10:00 am

Come meet artist, Cy Kuckenbaker, as he begins work on the latest video in his San Diego Studies collection, featuring a series of skateboarders, time-condensed, as always, to give the viewer a unique look at what takes place in a particular skate park over the course of a few hours. What is more fitting for San Diego than a video on skateboarding? But this one will be like no skate video you have ever seen before!

Saturday, June 21st
10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Free with Museum admission

As with the previous two Art Labs, Cy will be there to chat, answer your questions and tell stories about his life as a film maker and artist. And, of course, he will edit his newest effort, giving you insight into how he produces videos that are seen by millions of people around the world.

The Darkroom: Cristopher Cichocki

06.26.2014 6:30 pm

Join MOPA for the inaugural event in our experimental forum, The Darkroom. Comprised of artist performances, lectures, and film screenings, this provocative series will provide an exploratory environment and immersive experience in the photographic arts. Guests can mix and mingle in the Museum’s galleries and enjoy creative cocktails from the bar.

In conjunction with our exhibition After Ansel Adams, MOPA is proud to bring multi-disciplinary Coachella Valley artist, Cristopher Cichocki, to San Diego for the first time. Cichocki will present Circulation, a site-specific installation, accompanied by two audio/visual performances in 3-D along with a DJ set curated by the artist.

Cichocki’s work, inspired by the intersection of mankind, the natural world, and industry invites a full sensory experience through his combination of painting, photography, sculpture, video, and sound. Concerned with notions of sustainability and our effect on the environment, his work has focused intensely on the Salton Sea and surrounding desert regions. Cristopher Cichocki's work has been shown internationally, including the Palm Springs Art Museum, Museum of Image and Sound Sao Paulo, Casa Franca Brasil Rio de Janerio, Portland Institute of Contemporary Art, among others.

Thursday, June 26, 2014
