08.03.2017 6:00 pm

This summer the continental United States will be treated to a total solar eclipse for the first time since 1979! In San Diego, the event will reach partial totality and it will be a stunning opportunity to view, photograph and share out your experience of this unique celestial event. Join us at MOPA in the evening on August 3 to hear from Les and Mary Anderson, veteran photographers with experience documenting 15 solar eclipses over the past 30 years. Participants will get to see professional gear set up at the museum, hear pro tips for viewing and photographing the eclipse and ask questions, and all will leave with a comprehensive hand-out and a pair of eclipse viewing glasses.

A Hard Day's Night
Richard Lester, 1964, 1h 27m

In partnership with Film Geeks SD

The first Beatles film! The year is 1964 and four young lads from Liverpool are about to change the world - if only the madcap world will let them out of their hotel room. Richard Lester's boldly contemporary rock n' roll comedy unleashes the fledgling Beatles into a maelstrom of screaming fans, paranoid producers, rabid press and troublesome family members, and reveals the secret of their survival and success: an insatiable lust for mischief and a life-affirming addiction to joy.

Christian Cinetto, 2015, 1h 22m, Italian with English subtitles

In October 2013, a small crew enters the correctional facility in Padua to hold a course on short film making. A casting session is held and out of the 40 inmates attending, 15 are selected for the course. The inmates are from 7 different nationalities and all awaiting trial. The crew doesn’t know why they are in jail, but they are encouraged by the hope in their eyes and carry on providing acting and writing classes. Is it possible for a group of complex, diverse and fragile of men to be rehabilitated through cinema? After 5 months of intensive lessons and rehearsals, they are ready to film and something has changed forever.

Film: Blue Moon (1997)

08.19.2017 2:00 pm

Blue Moon
KO I-Chen, 1997, 97m, Mandarin w/ English subtitles

MOPA and Pacific Arts Movement present two unique screenings of BLUE MOON, a one-of-a-kind experience that has a rethink on authorial intention, narrative structure, and the materiality of film (or in this case, DCP).

In 1997, Taiwanese director Ko I-cheng did something never before done on film. He designed, shot, and released a film made up of five reels that can be played in any order. There are 120 different possible story combinations for BLUE MOON, a film that centers around three characters who intersect in Taipei, forcing them to remember their past and imagine what happy endings life has in store for them.

We will be presenting BLUE MOON twice in different orders to be selected randomly by the audience. Join us for this rare opportunity to see a true landmark of film history, presented in a brand new digital restoration.

Discussion after each screening with Brian Hu, Artistic Director of  the San Diego Asian Film Festival.

4pm - Blue Moon Screening #2
