Five days of macabre film, art, and literature! Horrible Imaginings will have almost 15 features and dozens of short films that explore darker themes in the horror, thriller, suspense, and dark fantasy or science fiction genres! We will also have panels, readings, discussions, performance art, and more! This is the ultimate destination for macabre art and film in San Diego--we are too sunny; we need more darkness!

APA San Diego Presents: Anthony Friedkin - Beggars Banquet

APA San Diego invites you to the first of the Beggars Banquet series featuring renowned Los Angeles photographer Anthony Friedkin in an intimate one-on-one studio setting. Celebrating a lifetime as an artist with a camera, Mr. Friedkin will be showing his hand-made, fine art darkroom prints chosen from various photo essays he has accomplished through the years. These include The Gay Essay, the Hollywood Series, images from his heralded Wave Portfolio and his new panoramas documenting LA Street Art.

 

Anthony’s photographs are included in the permanent collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. His pictures have been published and exhibited internationally.

Film: USS Indianapolis: The Legacy

KPBS and Sullivan Solar Power present the GI Film Festival San Diego. On Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2016 at 7 p.m. ​the Opening Night Screening and Reception ​will be held at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park ​and will ​featur​e the 2016 documentary, “USS Indianapolis: The Legacy.” Filmmaker Q&A and a reception will follow the film screening. This thrilling retelling of the fate of the World War II heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis exclusively uses first-person accounts from 107 survivors of the devastating torpedo attack. The film took 10 years to produce. Local filmmakers, Sara Vladic and Melanie Capacia Johnson, will attend the kick-off event.

​Ticket cost is $10 / $8 for military or veterans. MOPA Members receive $2.00 discount on any film screening priced at $10 with code "MOPA"

Conversation with Fazal Sheikh

You're invited to a conversation with the sixth Lou Stoumen Prize in Photography recipient, Fazal Sheikh. Sheikh was selected for his portrait work with people from around the world living in displaced and marginalized communities. The conversation is free and open to the public.

Celebrating 100 years of Roald Dahl: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Based on Roald Dahl's original book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The enigmatic candy manufacturer Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) stages a contest by hiding five golden tickets in five of his scrumptious candy bars. Whoever comes up with these tickets will win a free tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of candy. The last of five coveted "golden tickets" falls into the hands of a sweet but very poor boy named Charlie.
