Connecting to Collections

07.12.2014 10:00 am

Join MOPA’s curatorial department for this seasonal series that links the Museum’s permanent collection with our exhibitions, by allowing members the opportunity to view original works in MOPA’s print viewing room.

Visitors will have an opportunity to meet with the curatorial staff in an informal event while seeing unique items from artists who are connected to Aperture magazine in the permanent collection. Connecting to Collections day is held in conjunction with the current exhibition Aperture remix, and expands on the theme by looking at work from seminal photographers in the medium such as Ansel Adams, Richard Misrach, Nancy Newhall, Minor White, and more. Visitors will also have an opportunity to see a selection of books in the Edmund L. and Nancy K. Dubois Library as part of the experience.

Saturday, July 12 at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon. First tour is reserved for current MOPA members. Not a current MOPA Member? Join here.

Why are so many photographers reverting to analog, while others continue to experiment with digital processes? See for yourself in this unique camp that explores both film and digital photography through inspired activities and shooting assignments. The first week will include 3 days of darkroom work as Dave Eichinger, Photography Department Head and Lead Professor at City College, walks students through the process of developing a roll of film and making their own prints under the red lights. The second week, led by professional photographer Bernadette Unis-Johnston, students will dive into the artistic side of digital photography and mixed media processes.

*Students are encouraged to bring both a digital camera with manual settings and a film camera, but are not required to do so to participate in the camp. Students who do not have their own cameras will be able to borrow digital cameras and film Holgas/Dianas from MOPA.

**Campers will be making a 20 minute walk down to the City College darkroom and back on T, W, and Th of Week 1.

SD Italian Film: Many Kisses Later (Ex)

07.31.2014 7:30 pm

The 2009 Italian box office champion Many Kisses Later (also know as ‘Ex’), from Fausto Brizzi, is a brisk romantic comedy about that crazy little thing called love. It does indeed begin with declarations of love and plenty of kisses, but the question is raised: does love go on?

The film follows six couples between Christmas and Valentine’s Day in episodes that intertwine and revolve around the end of a love affair and the ways former lovers can shape our lives. Exes are like the Phoenix rising from the ashes… not dead but rather lying in wait.  ‘Many Kisses Later’ offers illustrations of relationships that have turned into hatred, into friendship, and ones where the flame of love still burns.  Some lovers have lost sight of each other by choice, others by a bizarre twist of fate, others by mistake. But the film’s message is clear: exes remain a part of our lives and who we are, for better or worse, is at least in part due to them.
