The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) seeks a highly motivated and energetic individual with strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills for the position of Deputy Director.

MOPA is one of the nation's premier institutions dedicated solely to photography and film. Located in historic Balboa Park, our world class Museum offers an annual calendar of exceptional exhibitions, educational programs, films, and lifespan learning opportunities. Each year over 100,000 patrons visit MOPA with an additional 120,000 yearlyvisits to our main website, along with another 102,000 yearly visits to our CARE (Collaborative Arts Resources for Education) Program website. They leave with a diverse and enriching visual art experience, unique to San Diego and the national photographic community.

As one of only three independent photography museums in the nation and the only independent museum in California devoted to lens-based imagery, MOPA values innovation and education. The Deputy Director is part of the senior management team and will lead the Museum’s operational needs across all areas of MOPA’s activities and programs.  The successful candidate will have a minimum of five years of senior leadership experience in operations at a museum, preferably an art museum.  The Deputy Director will work in close collaboration with the Director, Department Directors, and the Board of Trustees. She or he must have direct experience in finance, human resources, and management. The candidate will have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, a strong understanding of budgeting practices and financial accountability, the ability to manage resources strategically and efficiently, the ability to analyze data and situations and propose solutions, and experience in managing a staff of 10 or more.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Accounting and Finance

  • Oversee budget preparation and analysis, audit and 990 preparation, cash flow management, income/expenses, financial reports on a weekly, monthly, and annual basis, management of MOPA’s banking and investment relationships, grant compliance and reports, management of investment and asset accounts.
  • Provide the staff and Board with reports on budgets, income and expenses, and long term financial information.
  • Steward and coordinate the activities of the finance and audit committees of the Board of Trustees.

Operations and Facility

  • Oversee all business and legal matters such as insurances, business, sales, and property taxes, City requirements, etc.
  • Manage contracts and vendors for facilities, information technologies, payroll, etc.
  • Analyze operations in terms of meeting objectives.
  • Determine areas of potential cost reduction, income growth, program improvement, or policy change.
  • Update and create policies and procedures to ensure best practices, non-profit integrity, and ethics.
  • Oversee facilities operations including on-going management of building maintenance and improvements, security and HVAC systems, etc.

Human Resources

  • Oversee all personnel-related functions.
  • Manage MOPA’s human resources activities including, reviewing and updating employee benefit plans and Museum handbooks, overseeing payroll, performance management process, and all paperwork related to personnel activities.
  • Oversee and develop training programs for staff to further professional growth.

Visitor Relations

  • Provide leadership and oversight of the Museum's Visitor Relations department, which includes admissions and the store.
  • Assist in identifying and providing tools to ensure income targets are achieved.

Marketing

  • Provide leadership and oversight of the Museum’s Marketing department.
  • Guide department in overall marketing initiatives, including setting priorities.
  • Provide website support for Marketing Manger.

Technology

  • Oversee the Museum’s technology needs including daily operational infrastructure, MOPA’s website, and specialized technology projects.
  • Collaborate with the Balboa Park Online Collaborative on technology needs, updates, specific projects, etc.
  • Lead staff in connecting technology needs and projects with internal and external initiatives to maximize resources.

General

  • Ensure the smooth operations across all areas of the museum’s activities and programs.
  • Lead staff in Museum initiatives and in making connections between projects/needs with larger initiatives.
  • Oversee and coordinate weekly Directors meetings including agenda, financial information, etc.
  • Assist in creating and implementing the Museum’s strategic plan, as well as short and long-range plans.
  • Assist in stewardship of board members, donors, supporters, and visitors including direct interaction with the City of San Diego and Balboa Park contacts.
  • Represent the Museum at professional gatherings, events, conventions, meetings.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Over five years of senior leadership experience in operations with a museum, preferably an arts organization.
  • Direct experience with buildings operations, financial systems, and human resources.
  • Experience with managing a staff of 10 or more.
  • Exceptional communications skills (both written and verbal).

Skills Needed:

  • General computer knowledge and experience with QuickBooks, Paychex, AssetKeeper, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Website management, etc.
  • Excellent professional writing and communication skills.
  • A dynamic team leader.
  • Confidence and grace when stewarding patrons, supporters, and visitors of MOPA.
  • A strong understanding of budgeting practices and financial accountability.
  • Ability to manage resources strategically and with efficiency.
  • Highly organized with great attention to details.
  • Highly motivated.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.

Must be available to work some weekends, holidays, and evenings.

The Director of Development will serve as the lead in creating a culture of philanthropy for MOPA.  The successful candidate will have a minimum of five years of progressive senior leadership experience in development with a demonstrated track record of successful fundraising.  The Director of Development will steward upper-level donors and support groups and work in close collaboration with the Director and Board of Trustees on cultivation and solicitation strategies. She or he must have direct experience in securing major gifts (defined as $25,000 plus, with a focus on cultivating prospects for $50,000 plus).  This position will develop and implement a comprehensive long-range plan for institutional advancement, to expand the donor base.  She or he will have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, a strong understanding of budgeting practices and financial accountability, and the ability to manage resources strategically and efficiently.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning, oversight, and implementation of all fundraising activities for the museum's annual operating budget.
  • Oversight of research, identification, cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation of funding from individuals, foundations, corporations, government agencies and other sources in collaboration with museum staff and Board of Trustees.
  • Expand existing fundraising approaches to deepen engagement with donors and other stakeholders.
  • Development and management of a portfolio of major gift prospects (defined as $25,000 plus, w/focus on cultivating prospects for $50,000 plus).
  • Identify new sources for sustainable revenue.
  • Identify new potential donors, targeting prospects for personal visits and moving annual donors through the donor pyramid into the next giving level.
  • Raise funds through direct asks from individual donors, foundations, corporations and other sources.
  • Oversight of the process for the development of an endowment campaign and a planned giving program.
  • Create and oversee a strong stewardship program that includes gift recognition and appreciation.
  • Oversee and coordinate donor cultivation events including exhibition openings, donor dinners, small dinners hosted by trustees, member tours, engagement events, and MOPA’s photo auction.
  • Maintain personal contact and good relationships with donors, administrators, volunteers, and other constituencies.
  • Oversee department’s budgeting practices and financial accountability.
  • Meet with accounting department regularly to reconcile accounts.
  • Active participation on board committees in the areas of fundraising, board development, and strategic planning.
  • Serve as primary Museum liaison to the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees and as the primary point of Development contact with the Museum’s 20-member Board. 
  • Work with the Board President, Director, Development Committee and individual members of the Board to identify their development and networking capabilities and to help them achieve their goals.
  • As a member of senior management, works closely with Museum Director, Deputy Director, Director of Design and Exhibitions, and Director of Education and Public Programs on budgeting, strategic planning, relationship building, funding and programming opportunities.
  • Supervises and evaluates a four-person staff including a Membership Manager, Special Events Manager, part-time Institutional Giving Manager and Development Assistant.
  • Represent the Museum to the community at events and conferences as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Over five years of progressive development experience preferably with an arts organization, with a proven record of success in planning, implementing and managing fundraising strategies and campaigns.
  • Demonstrated relationship with San Diego funding community preferred.
  • Exceptional communications skills (both written and verbal).
