Celebrate San Diego’s local jazz musicians and take in the “Sounds of Jazz Loft”
MOPA’s newest exhibition, The Jazz Loft Project: W. Eugene Smith in NYC, 1957-1965, displays Smith’s obsessive documentation of a dilapidated, five-story loft at 821 Sixth Avenue in New York City’s flower district. Capturing the nocturnal jazz scene inside the loft and the street life below, W. Eugene Smith made approximately 40,000 exposures and recorded 4,000 hours of audiotape.
Walking through the exhibition, you get a strong sense of the loft’s layout, its guests, the music, and the street life just outside. Audio recordings are playing in the galleries and at listening stations and you can begin to imagine how it might have felt to visit the loft. Well we, at MOPA, wanted to heighten that experience even more by bringing live music to the galleries.
Onthe first Thursday evening of June, July, and August stop by MOPA for a solo jazz session in the galleries, featuring celebrated local musicians selected by Jazz 88.3. Experience The Jazz Loft Project: W. Eugene Smith in NYC, 1957-1965 while the music of the time is performed live! An early session will begin at 5:30pm and a later session, at 7:00pm, will happen for the after-dinner crowd.
