Fata Morgana USA The American Way of Life
From the Intoduction
"Josep Renau, a vital and prolific artist who lived in exile for political reasons much of his life, produced, with the determination of someone who was constantly thinking and acting, moving artistic work which summarized the dynamic alienating impact of mass-media and publicity on society. Renau gave us a new view of the mystified images that occupy our contemporary iconic universe. In a very personal way he linked the spirit of the classical avant-garde with formulas close to Pop.
The photo-montage series "Fata-Morganan USA. American Way of Life", 69 pieces selected by Renau himself of the 100 he produced in Mexico and Berlin from 1952 and 1966, is the set of works which best reflect the level of technical and artistic development achieved by Renau. In these works he resorts to the use of paradox and playfulness with photographic and publicity images in order to express his rebellion."
