The CARE Website
The CARE program (Collaborative Art Resource for Educators) is a unique collaboration between the Museum of Contemporary Art, the San Diego Museum of Art, and MoPA. Phase 1 of the website www.carearts.org allows teachers to download class materials for grades K-12, find resources for art and photography supplies, and learn about museum education programs. The final phase of the website, an interactive site for students, will be launched in the fall of 2006.

CURRICULA
Beyond Beauty: What is True Beauty?

The Education Department recently completed the project Beyond Beauty: What is Real Beauty? in collaboration with the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Diego, San Diego Museum of Art, and the County Office of Education. Teens from the Boys and Girls Clubs participated in a multi-week program that resulted in public service announcements in English and Spanish and high school curriculum.

Today’s teens are bombarded by the media with narrow definitions of beauty and ideal body image, causing distorted perceptions and dissatisfaction with their bodies. To address this issue, the Education Department was inspired to create Beyond Beauty. The goal of the project was to empower teens to find their own definitions of beauty, increase their self esteem, and become more critical about the media’s intent. The teen-produced PSAs were widely broadcast on the County’s ITV station.

The Beyond Beauty: What is Real Beauty? high school curriculum was designed for psychology, sociology, history, and art history classes. The curriculum features 5 lesson plans that address and analyze how the media and cultural influences affect body image. With challenging activities, a supplemental DVD, and original images, this curriculum is designed to provoke a thoughtful and engaging discussion about this incredibly relevant topic.

$25 per copy, plus tax; additional shipping costs may apply. Purchase your copy online.

Beyond Beauty was generously funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, Weingart Foundation, Thomas Ackerman Foundation, Qualcomm, and the Kenneth and Eileen Norris Foundation.
