As
a result of the popularity of MoPA’s first youth exhibition
in 2006, Close-Up: San Diego Neighborhoods, the museum
will highlight student works every year. This year’s youth
exhibition, entitled New Light: Selections from MoPA's Education
Programs, will be on view from September 8, 2007 to January
6, 2008. The exhibition showcases photographic works emerging
from MoPA’s Education department.
Collected
from the museum’s photography and film programs, outreach
and after-school classes, workshops, and camps, the exhibition
represents the innovative and creative programs of the Education
department at the Museum of Photographic Arts. This exhibition
will provide a rare opportunity to view not only what goes on
behind the gallery walls, but provides insight into the lives
of the next generation of photographers.
WRITING
WITH LIGHT in 2008
As
part of the Museum of Photographic Arts’ new vision to become
an institution for visual learning and to support the museum’s
education programs, MoPA is proud to present the third annual
youth exhibition entitled Writing with Light, which will
be on view from September 13 to December 4, 2008. The exhibition
will illustrate the connections between photography and literacy,
using the photographic arts as inspiration, students will interpret
literary works, both fact and fiction.
Inspired
by the exhibition, A Literacy of Images: Nancy Newhall &
the Art of Photography, which will be on view at the same
time, the exhibition will provide students an opportunity for
expression through both a visual and narrative connection by linking
the subject of photography with writing. Collected from various
schools in San Diego County, a jury of museum staff and field
professionals will select the final photographs to be exhibited
in September 2008. The exhibition will bring together the significance
of viewing photography fundamentally through writing, while offering
a new way of looking at the medium.
