MOPA Presents Kevin Cooley: Elements

Release Date:
August 21, 2013

(San Diego, Calif.) The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) presents Kevin Cooley: Elements beginning October 19th, 2013. Elements, a video installation, will feature two works by the artist, Skyward and Tow.

A Los Angeles-based photographer and video artist, Cooley’s work thoughtfully investigates the ever-changing intersection between man and nature.  Skyward is a ceiling projected installation assuming the vantage point of a car passenger gazing at the sky above. This simple shift in perspective across familiar terrain offers the opportunity to take in a different landscape with details often overlooked in our everyday lives.

“Kevin’s work is all about the sensory experience of seeing. He takes things out of context, coaxing the viewer to see and think about the subject in a different way,” stated Chantel Paul, Assistant Curator at MOPA. “His videos tend to focus on one particular detail and leave room for individual interpretation.”

The second piece in the exhibition, Tow, was created during the artist’s participation in the Arctic Circle Expeditionary Residency Program in 2011. This two-channel video portrays a lassoed fallen ice cap in tow behind a boat, showing the Arctic seascape from a first person point-of-view. The slow speed at which the greater landscape is revealed as the boat slowly tugs the crackling, bobbing glacial fragment allows us to better see this enveloping environment and creates a meditative experience.

Kevin Cooley: Elements is MOPA’s first video installation since 2007 and Cooley’s first solo museum exhibition. According to MOPA’s Executive Director, Deborah Klochko, “Kevin’s work explores ideas related to perception and perspective. The subtlety and elegance of his videos engage viewers and challenge them beyond the expected.”

You can view Kevin Cooley: Elements at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park from October 18, 2013 through February 2, 2014.
