MOPA Presents My City, Your City

Release Date:
September 3, 2013

San Diego, Calif. – As we go through life, our perspective on the world changes. This fact alone makes My City, Your City, the upcoming student exhibition at the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA), worth some attention. Opening on October 19th, My City, Your City showcases not only the talent of San Diego’s youth, but also their unique view on our hometown.

Since 2006, MOPA has been exhibiting the best work from San Diego students, grades K – 12. Each year a different theme is selected and the top works, both still photos and videos, are displayed. The winning selections are based on originality, quality and their expression of the theme. This year’s panel of judges included SD City Council President, Todd Gloria, MOPA’s Executive Director, Deborah Klochko, San Diego-based freelance photojournalist, Sam Hodgson, and Program Coordinator for the Art and Photography programs at UCSD Extension, Annika Nelson.

According to Deborah Klochko, “the selection process is incredibly inspiring. These students look at the world through very different eyes than most of us. Because of this, they help connect us to a version of San Diego that we, as adults, may have forgotten.”

What does it mean to call a place home? Is your community where you live or where you go to school? What makes your neighborhood unique? What people, places, or spaces make your city special? How does your city compare to other places around the world? These are the questions explored in the works of My City, Your City through both a personal and cultural lens.

You can see My City, Your City on display at MOPA from October 19th, 2013 through February 2, 2014. Additionally, a number of works from this exhibition will be on display at the Civic Center Branch of the Chula Vista Public Library and the Downtown Kettner branch of US Bank.
