Staking Claim: A California Invitational
October 8, 2013 – January 26, 2014

(San Diego, Calif.) July 1, 2013 – Staking Claim: A California Invitational opens at the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) on Tuesday, October 8th. This original exhibition is the second installment of a triennial series showcasing the talent of and diverse scope of photographic work being done by photographers living within the Museum’s home state. Sixteen different artists, all of whom reside in California, are featured in Staking Claim and all of the work has been created within the past five years.

MOPA’s Assistant Curator, Chantel Paul, explains, “as a California-based institution, we feel it’s important to recognize those photographers in our own state who are creating truly incredible work that reaches beyond California’s borders and is in conversation with the global dialogue surrounding the medium. “

These photographers, both emerging and established, were selected through a nomination process that began in the summer of 2012. MOPA called upon their peers in the field - institutional colleagues, galleries, and other photography professionals – to nominate up to three photographers who they felt were creating significant bodies of work. Once that list was compiled, meeting the artists through studio visits and seeing work during gallery visits helped determine which artists would be exhibited.

The variety of work that this selection process produced is as varied as the state of California itself.  “What’s interesting is how photography is redefining itself right now,” stated Deborah Klochko, Executive Director of the Museum. “And MOPA is here to help share what that means. There is no one definition of photography anymore and that is very exciting.”

With the ease of access to digital equipment and post-production tools, photography has changed dramatically in recent years. The work in Staking Claim: A California Invitational embraces the digital medium but also remains true to, and in some cases reinterprets, traditional photographic processes.  The result is a dynamic exhibition that highlights the constant evolution of the art form.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a full color exhibition catalog, published by Modernbook Editions, featuring an introduction by Colin Westerbeck, contributing writer for Art in America, as well as insights from the curator and brief biographies of each artist.
